What Is an Education Savings Account (ESA)?

The Texas Education Savings Account (ESA) program allows eligible families to access $1 Billion dollars of public funds for private education-related expenses. Families can use ESAs for tuition, fees, instructional materials, tutoring, therapies, transportation, and technology.

When Does the Program Start?

The program begins in the 2026-2027 school year. 

Is My Child Eligible for an ESA?

Yes, every child in Texas who is a U.S. citizen or legal resident and can attend a Texas public school is eligible to apply!

What If Applications Go Over the $1 Billion Available?

Priority will go to: 

  • Siblings 
  • Students with disabilities from low- and middle-income families 
  • Students from low-income families 
  • Students from middle-income families 
  • Then everyone else 

How Much Can My Child Receive Each Year?

  • Approximately $10,000 per student enrolled in an accredited private school 
  • Up to $30,000 for students with disabilities 
  • $2,000 for students not in an accredited private school to use on qualifying expenses

Which Schools, Programs and Services Can I Use ESA Money for?

Your ESA funds can be used for: 

  • Private school tuition and fees at participating private schools or private child care providers that meet program standards
  • Online education programs. 
  • Industry credential programs. 
  • Private tutors and educational therapists. 
  • Instructional materials and technology. 
  • Transportation costs. 

How and When Can I Apply? When Will I Find Out if My Child Is Accepted?

You can sign up on the Best Place for Students websitewe’ll notify you as soon as the application becomes available (likely January 2026)(Sign me up for notifications!) Once accepted, you will receive electronic access to manage your child’s ESA account.  It’s that easy – and there is no fee to apply!

If I Use an ESA, Does My Child Have to Take the STAAR Test?

No, students are NOT required to take the STAAR test. Private schools are already required to give their students a nationally norm-referenced test each year in reading and math.

If I Stay at My Public School will I Still be Eligible for the ESA

No, you will only be eligible if you are not attending a traditional public school or public charter school.

What Grades are Included?

Pre-K – 12. However, students must be eligible to receive free Pre-K to qualify for an ESA used for Pre-K services.

What to Know About the NEW Education Savings Account Offering for Texas Families!

What Is an Education Savings Account (ESA)?

The $1 Billion Dollar Texas Education Savings Account (ESA) program allows approved providers (private schools, educational services, therapists, etc.) to receive payments from eligible families ranging from $2,000 – $30,000 per participating student.

Can My School/Program Participate?

Any accredited Pre-K through 12th grade private school can accept ESA funds, once approved by the state. Other providers such as tutors, therapists, teaching services and Supplemental Special Education Services (SSES) providers must meet state-defined requirements and be approved by the state.

How Much Can I Receive in Payments per Student Each Year?

  • Approximately $10,000 per student enrolled in an accredited private school 
  • Up to $30,000 for enrolled students with disabilities 
  • $2,000 for other participating students utilizing funds on qualifying expenses 

How Often are Payments Made?

Payments will be made as follows: 

  • 25% no later than July 1st 
  • 50% no later than October 1st 
  • Remaining amount no later than April 1st

Do I Need to Be Accredited to Participate in the ESA Program?

Yes, private schools must be accredited and operating for 2 years. Non-school providers like therapists and tutors must be licensed or certified in accordance with state standards. (Details to be released later this year).

Do I Have to Administer the STAAR Test?

No, providers are NOT required to administer the STAAR test. Private schools are already required to give their students a nationally norm-referenced test each year in math and reading. 

What Are My Reporting Requirements?

Each year, providers are required to:  

  • Private Schools must submit grades 3-12 testing data for participating students. 
  • Providers and schools must conduct background checks. 
  • Provide compliance information for financial transactions. 
  • Maintain student confidentiality and cooperate with audits.
